Brothers Keeper Written by 'Guest' on 2007-02-09 12:15:18 My 16yr old brother has lived with me and my fiance for the past year and a half. His dad (mercedes benz salesman) has given me personal checks of $300 a month for child support and pays for medical insurance. In CA $300 isn't much. I pay all the food, utilities, and recreation. Even though I disagreed the father wants to cliam him. Can you advise me? |
Eligible Dependents Written by 'Guest' on 2008-07-18 16:38:31 For Brother's Keeper - his son does not live with him. That makes the father ineligible to claim. For the 19 year old, he is no longer considered a minor. He was eleigible to work and pay taxes as a adult, and thus you cannot claim him, except possible for education expenses. Those laws apply until a dependent is 24 or graduated from college/university. However, I am not sure if they now apply to grade school. |
