Happy Tax Freedom Day

ImageAs of June 19th this year, in Vancouver, we have reached Tax Freedom Day, according to the Fraser Institute. This day marks the point at which we start earning for ourselves, after working since the start of the year until now to pay taxes to the government.

Tax Freedom Day does not look at the services we recieve in return for the taxes we pay, it only focuses on the price we pay. Clearly all the benefits we receive as Canadians do not come without a price tag, and for most of us it is hard to comprehend that price. If you compare what you get, compared to some countries you will find we get a lot, and we pay a lot for it.

Tax Freedom Day arrives five days earlier than it did last year, when it fell on June 24. This means little to the average income earner, who probably feels that the government gets too much.

As a tax preparer, another thought comes to mind. Not everyone will have the same Tax Freedom Day, since different people pay different amounts of tax. For example, perhaps you have been missing some legitimate deductions on your tax return, and you are paying more than you should. That is one reason to have a professional tax preparer check your tax returns periodically, even if you prefer to do your own usually. In most cases we can help save you money.
